Build a Hoistway

To install an elevator into your existing house, first a hoistway needs to be built. It is usually done by a general contractor in accordance with the specifications that we provide based on the brand and model of the selected elevator. Depending on your house architecture, the hoistway may be built inside the house or attached to the house outside.

Once your elevator is up and running, make sure it undergoes periodic preventive maintenance service to keep your elevator working safely and efficiently. This is usually done as per manufacturer's recommendation and includes lubrication of moving parts, inspection and adjustment of operating and safety controls as well as other checks.

Safety Code

It's the elevator mechanics' mantra: safety, safety, safety. The ANSI/ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators covers design, construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of such equipment and its associated parts, rooms, spaces, and hoistways as elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, material lifts and the like.

3" x 5" Rule

The ANSI/ASME A17.1 Rule (aka 3"x5" Rule) for the Private Residence Elevators states:
   a) The clearance between the hoistway doors or gates and the hoistway edge of the landing sill shall not exceed 3 inches (76 mm).
   b) The distance between the hoistway face of the landing door or gate and the car door or gate shall not exceed 5 inches (127 mm).

Aging-In-Place Design Checklist

More homes are being built with "universal design" features that help people stay in their homes as they age. If you are seeking to modify an existing home for aging in place or build a new home to meet your needs over the long term, check out the NAHB's Aging-In-Place Design Checklist. It contains features you may want to consider for your next new construction or renovation project.

Accessible Design

Whether constructing a new or remodeling an existing building, one should follow the Department of Justice's accessibility standards. This document sets minimum requirements for newly designed and constructed or altered facilities to be readily accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities.

Elevator Safety

Though elevators are very safe transportation machinery, there are simple guidelines that need to be known and followed for better passenger safety. Please visit the National Elevator Industry Inc. ( Website for safety tips on how to properly ride elevators and what to do in case of the elevator stall. Another good source of the safety information is the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (

There are two major elevator types used in commercial and residential buildings: hydraulic type and traction type. Hydraulic elevators are powered by electric motors that pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston attched to a cabin. The traction elevators are powered by electric motors that drive traction cables and counterweight systems.

There is a perpetual argument going on between proponents of these two types. We, however, prefer and recommend the hydraulic elevators for their reliability, ease of maintenance, cost efficiency, quiet operation and smooth ride.

For commercial and residential applications, we install only the most reliable elevator brands such as Cemcolift, and Custom Elevator.

Although Cemcolift has been recently bought by MEI - Total Elevator Solutions, we continue to supply parts and maintain elevators currently in service that were manufactured by Cemcolift.

Cemcolift offered a selection of commercial and residential elevator designs in all sizes and capacity requirements. Whether that was a hydraulic or traction elevator, an in-ground or holeless application, a passenger or freight elevator, or standard or non-standard arrangement, Cemcolift designed and manufactured an elevator to fit your requirements.

Cemcolift's Limited Use/Limited Application (LULA) elevators were an excellent way to add value to and increase accessibility in your building. Although these elevators are intended for limited use, they were engineered and manufactured using the same criteria developed through decades of experience in commercial and industrial elevator systems.

Stair Lifts

A stair lift (stairlift), also know as a stair climber or a stairglide, is an electromechanical device for moving people up and down stairs. A stair lift has a rail mounted to the treads of the stairs. A chair or lifting platform is attached to the rail and a person on the chair or platform can move up and down along the rail. A stairlift is a great and surprisingly affordable solution for anyone experiencing difficulty going up and down the stairs.

We install state-of-the-art stair lifts manufactured by Acorn Stairlifts, Harmar and Savaria.

Acorn Stair Lift The Acorn stair lifts (shown on the left) have been installed in hundreds of thousands of homes worldwide. They are perfectly safe, absolutely reliable and easy to use.

They have wireless remote control, and fold up when not in use. The Acorn stairlifts are battery powered, with no messy trailing cables. They have safety sensors, smooth start and stop, and safety belts. In a power outage the stair lift will continue working, so you will still be able to get up and down stairs.

Harmar Summit Pinnacle™ stairlift The Harmar Summit Pinnacle™ stair lifts (shown on the right) are the most compact stairlifts on the market and allow for the widest clearance of the staircase. They are mounted to the stairs, fold to within 11 inches of the wall and their track is only 6.5 inches wide.

The advantages of the Pinnacle™ stairlifts include a wide, comfortable, swiveling seat, safety sensors preventing the lift from running if something is blocking the stairs and wireless remote controls.

The Pinnacle™ stairlift has a 3-year warranty on parts, a lifetime warranty on its gear rack, and 1 year warranty on its batteries. It also includes a innovative helical drive system that makes it more energy efficient than many other stair lifts.

Savaria SL-1000 stairlift The Savaria SL-1000 stairlift (shown on the left) works on straight stairs in residential applications to glide up and down in comfort and safety using the onboard controls or with the help of remote control operation, providing barrier-free access in your home.

With its extra comfort seat, adjustable width arms and high capacity, this stairlift is feature-packed. The constant-charge battery operation means that your stairlift works even through a power failure giving you peace of mind.

The Savaria SL-1000 installs quickly and easily and its onboard diagnostic display alerts you of any service issues.

Wheelchair Lifts

A wheelchair lift, also known as a platform lift, is an electromechanical device designed to move a wheelchair and its occupant up and down in order to overcome steps or other vertical barriers.

We install the finest wheelchair lifts manufactured by Savaria and Harmar.

ES-125 Wheelchair lift by Savaria (replaced by Delta) Savaria makes a wide variety of wheelchair lifts to choose from.

ES-125 Inclined Platform Lift from Savaria (shown on the left) is easily installed on most straight staircases indoors or outdoors.

It is suitable for use in homes or in public spaces. This unit is a great space-saving and affordable option when you require access to a second level, but an elevator or vertical lift is not a practical option. It travels along a guide rail over the stairs to carry a wheelchair passenger up or down a straight run of stairs.

For more information on available wheelchair lift models and options, please refer to the Savaria web page, Savaria wheelchair lifts.

Material lifts are designed to carry materials only, not people.

For industrial and commercial applications, we install the most reliable material lifts manufactured by Harmar, Matot and Pflow Industries.
